Psalm 40
‘To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry. 2 He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. 3 He has put a new song in my mouth— Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the Lord’
Like me you may be very familiar with this psalm, God bringing us out of the dark pits we sometimes find ourselves in. The bit that seemed strange to me when I read it the other day was the last bit in verse three. The sequence of events – waiting patiently, God hearing David’s cry, God rescuing, establishing, then David singing a new song (Joy) and then the strange bit – many seeing what had happened causing them to fear and trust in the Lord. Or in another version ‘revere and worship and trust in the Lord’. I don’t know about you, but, at work I think that people expect that as a Christian, I would have no troubles or that I would be happy all the time, that I wouldn’t make mistakes. And I wouldn’t expect that if I did sink into the, ‘horrible pit’, in full public view, that my rescue, then my praising the Lord would lead them to also trust in the Lord. Reading this I’m thinking, of course! That’s how it all works, but, in reality, I don’t want them to see me failing, or battered by what sometimes happens in life. Crying out in desperation for help can seem like failure, especially in the workplace! However, I guess what God wants and what people want, is authenticity. David is authentic and it seems public (read the rest of the psalm), all the way through the process. Public about being in the pit and also public in praising God and declaring His Goodness – again something we find difficult. If we are going to praise God and get all happy about it let’s do that in church, in our home groups or at a conference, not out there, people might think we are nuts! Yet I believe the Lord is about to get people’s attention in a unique way. A Fresh fear of the Lord coming on people, from seeing the beauty and the wonder of God’s person and nature on/in a person, a person like me and you! Whereas we worry that people will see something negative, what they will actually see is holiness, because they will see the beauty and wonder of God’s nature revealed on us and working in us. As we reach out, the beauty and wonder of God’s nature will be at work in their lives too, blessing , rescuing, redeeming and healing

In Joel 3:10 we read, ‘Beat your plowshares into swords And your pruning hooks into spears; Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’ In other words wherever we are (ploughshares and pruning hooks = our work place, our campaigning for the environment, the school yard, playing our role in politics/media/art/local groups, wherever we might be) that place is our public place. We are there for the Lords purposes; our ‘work’ is going to become a sword, ie supernatural. We will become supernatural sign posts to God. And it won’t seem right to us, because, we will feel weak, vulnerable even. That is why Joel calls for the weak to say, ‘I am strong’. We should expect to tell our stories of God’s rescue and goodness and expect for people to see us in the midst of living it out. Further, we should expect that ‘many will see this, revere and worship, And trust in the Lord’.

Dear Lord,
Thank you Lord that you love us and care for us and that your heart is also to love and care for the people around us. Help us to live authentic lives, to be real and not to hide away. May the light of your working in our lives be bright and may the eyes of those around us be opened to see your goodness, we pray. Amen

May you blessed today as you read this
